Green liner: the pool that becomes part of the garden

A green liner gives the water an intense green-turquoise colour, like Caribbean waters or a clear river. It suits lush gardens and mountain landscapes, but it is not for every home or every owner.

How the water looks

The green background blends with the natural blue of the water to give a vivid emerald turquoise. In the shallows the colour is light and clear, in the deep end denser, like a river over pebbles. In strong sun the effect is exotic; on cloudy days it turns darker and more woodland-like.

Compared with a sand-coloured liner, which gives a soft greenish tone, a green liner is more decisive: the water never looks blue at any time of day. It is a choice of character, not a compromise.

As for temperature, being a mid-to-dark tone it absorbs slightly more sun than light colours, with no real difference over the season. At night, white or warm white lighting brings out the emerald better than strong coloured effects.

Where it fits

  • Gardens with lawn, shrubs and tall trees, where the pool should look like a pond in the landscape.
  • Mountainous, very green areas such as Pelion or Corfu.
  • Stone houses with timber, pools surrounded by natural stone, and planting close to the edge.
  • Natural-style pools with a timber deck and low, warm lighting.

What it hides and what it shows

In day-to-day care, a green liner is forgiving with whatever comes in from the garden. Green and brown leaves, pine needles and tree pollen disappear into the background, and the pool looks well kept even if it hasn't been vacuumed for two days. On the other hand, light-coloured dust and calcium scale show a little more, though not as much as on an anthracite liner. The waterline gets dirty as on any liner and needs the same gentle sponging.

Just because you can't see the leaves doesn't mean they aren't there. While they sit on the floor they consume chlorine, leave brown marks and feed algae, so the leaf net and the cover are still essential.

When not to choose it

  • For guest accommodation or a holiday rental: many guests associate green water with dirt, even when it is crystal clear.
  • Under lots of deciduous trees: with leaves on the floor and a green background, the pool can look more like a cistern than the Caribbean.
  • With a white or grey modern house: intense green usually clashes with cool-toned materials.
  • If the pool is often left unattended: for the reason explained in the next section.

Green liners and algae

On a white or light blue liner, the first hint of green in the water shows immediately. On a green liner the same early algae growth easily goes unnoticed, because the water is already green. The difference between healthy and problem water is not the shade but the clarity:

  • If you can clearly see the floor at the deepest point, even from the far end of the pool, the water is fine.
  • If the walls feel slippery to the touch or the water loses its sparkle, growth has started.
  • Chlorine and pH are measured, not guessed. See how in testing pool water.

With correct chemistry and filtration, a green liner gets no more algae than any other; it just warns you later. If the water does get away from you, the recovery steps are the same as for any pool and are described in green pool water.

In this shade we install, for example, the Haogenplast liners StoneTile Tropic 15, StoneTile Emerald, StoneFlex Forest, Classic Light Green 8039. Every range and colour is on the Haogenplast liners page.

Questions

Can chemicals make the water look bluer with a green liner?

No. The tone of the water comes from the background and the light, not from chemicals. If you want blue water you need a different membrane colour, which only a liner replacement can give you.

Does a green liner work with copper ionization?

When copper gets out of range it can turn the water greenish and cause stains, and on a green liner you notice this later. If you are considering ionization, test copper regularly as well.
