Counter-current swimming: swim without needing the length

A counter-current swim system creates a strong current of water, so you can swim on the spot without reaching the opposite wall. That turns a small pool into a place to exercise, as long as there is a suitable electricity supply.

How it works

A powerful pump draws water from the pool and sends it back at speed through a nozzle in the wall, just below the surface. The swimmer swims against the current and stays roughly in the same spot. The strength is adjustable, with a valve or by changing the pump speed, to suit a beginner or a trained swimmer. Usually a pneumatic button on the pool edge switches the pump on and off, so there is no electricity near the water.

The system is independent of the circulation: it does not filter the water and only runs while you are using it. When it is on, it mixes the water vigorously, which helps spread heat and chemicals evenly, but it does not replace the normal filtration hours. Its pump can be heard while it runs, so its position is planned with the same care as the plant room.

In a prefab pool with a liner, the built-in nozzle passes through the panel and clamps the liner like any other fitting. That is why it is much simpler to plan for it from the start. Position and feasibility are checked at the site survey.

Power requirements

  • A counter-current pump is usually much more powerful than the filtration pump. Larger systems often need a three-phase supply.
  • It needs its own circuit from the panel, with a residual current device and proper earthing, installed by an electrician.
  • If the house has a single-phase supply, check in advance whether it is enough or needs upgrading.
  • Because it only runs while you swim, its effect on electricity consumption depends mainly on how often you swim.

Space requirements

The swimmer needs length to stretch out without kicking the opposite wall, and width for the arms. The nozzle usually goes in the middle of the short side, and the ladder somewhere else, so the swimming area stays clear. A pool with 1.50 m panels gives more comfortable swimming than one with 1.10 m panels, especially for tall swimmers. See pool depth on this.

If you mainly want to swim proper lengths and the plot allows it, a long, narrow lap pool is the other option. A counter-current makes the most sense when the space cannot take the length, for example in a mini pool or a small yard.

Massage and other uses

Many systems take a flexible massage hose or have a setting that mixes air into the jet for a softer feel. Children usually use it for play, so the strength should be set low and they should be supervised. Whatever the use, the same rule applies: switch the current off when you do not need it.

Questions

Can counter-current swimming be added to an existing pool?

Yes, most easily with a hang-on unit, which does not open a new fitting in the liner. A built-in system in an existing pool is possible in some cases, usually together with a liner replacement; this is checked at the site survey.

Do I definitely need three-phase power?

Not always. There are smaller systems for a single-phase supply, while the more powerful ones usually need three-phase. Your electrician checks the house supply before you choose.
