2 × 4 m pool: the smallest pool for cooling off in your yard
A 2×4 m pool has 8 m² of water and a volume of about 8 m³ with 1.10 m panels. It is not for swimming but for a dip, cooling off and relaxing, and it fits where an ordinary pool will not.
The 2×4 in numbers
| Item | 2×4 m pool |
|---|---|
| Water surface | 8 m² |
| Water with 1.10 m panels (water level about 1.0 m) | about 8 m³ |
| Water with 1.50 m panels (water level about 1.4 m) | about 11 m³ |
| Procedure | Small-scale works approval |
| Circulation | Skimmer |
With such a narrow width, 1.10 m panels are usually the sensible choice: an adult can stand everywhere, the water warms up quickly and filling it takes little water, which matters on an island or in a house supplied by water tanker truck. The 1.50 m option makes sense if you want it for standing immersion, like a cold plunge after a workout.
Who it is for
- A couple or one person who wants to cool off on summer afternoons without looking after a large volume of water.
- The yard of a town house, the back yard of a maisonette or a terrace in front of the living room.
- A holiday home that is open a few weeks a year: little water means few chemicals and a quick rebalance every time you arrive.
- Small children, always supervised, in water where an adult can stand right next to them.
It is not a pool for swimming strokes. If you want to swim, look at least at the 3×5 m pool. For the idea of a mini pool (plunge pool) in general, with its variations, there is a separate guide.
Approval, plant room and skimmer
At 8 m² you are well below the 50 m² limit, so a small-scale works approval is enough, provided the other conditions are met and the engineer submits their declaration before work starts. One of these conditions is a compact plant room, which suits such a small pool anyway: it takes up very little space and fits in a corner of the yard. More in the article on the pool plant room.
Circulation is by skimmer. An overflow channel and a balance tank for 8 m² of water would add construction out of all proportion to the size of the pool.
Setting out the space around it
The 2×4 works best when it is designed as part of the yard rather than as a separate object. A practical layout:
- Paving about 1 m all round: the whole thing takes up about 4×6 m.
- On one long side, a strip of about 2.5 m for two loungers, which brings you to about 6.5×6 m.
- Steps on the short side, so the full length stays free for sitting on the edge with your feet in the water.
- A shower next to the entry and the compact plant room in the corner furthest from the seating area.
If space is even tighter, one side can sit against a planter or a deck, as long as there is access for maintenance. All the sizes, from the 2×4 to the 6×12, are in the table of prefab pool sizes.

Questions
Can you swim in a 2×4 m pool?
Not really: 4 m is enough for a dip and a couple of strokes. It is a pool for cooling off and relaxing; for proper swimming you need a length of about 8 m or more.
Can a 2×4 m pool be raised above ground?
Yes, a prefab pool can be sunk into the ground or stand up to 1 m above natural ground level, which in a small yard gives you an edge to sit on. Above that height the small-scale works approval is not enough.
