Light blue liner: why it is still the most popular choice
A light blue liner gives the clean, bright blue everyone recognizes as "pool colour". It suits almost any house, hides dirt moderately well and rarely becomes tiresome over the years.
The blue the eye expects
Water on its own leans towards blue. A light blue liner strengthens this and gives a clean, saturated blue that changes less with cloud or time of day than grey and dark colours do. This consistency is its big advantage: the pool looks the same in May and in September, in the morning and in the afternoon.
It is also a colour that needs no explanation. It does not try to imitate a lake or the sea; it shows clearly that this is a pool with clean water, and for many people that is exactly the point.
When we recommend it
- Families with children: the floor and steps are clearly visible, so you can easily see where the children are standing and swimming. What else you need is covered in the family pool.
- Guesthouses and rental homes: guests immediately recognize blue as clean water, with no questions about greenish tints or a dark bottom. For the practical side, see a pool at a short-term rental home.
- Houses without a strong architectural style: on a detached house with a tiled roof, a maisonette or a courtyard with simple tiles, light blue fits in without needing to be matched to the materials.
- When you are not sure: it is the colour people rarely regret.
Light blue is also forgiving with the materials around the pool: it works with a white or beige coping, a timber deck, warm-toned tiles and terracotta. Only very intense shades of blue on window frames or furniture next to the water need care, as they can clash with the colour of the pool.
The shades of blue
"Light blue" is not a single colour. From very light to dark blue, the water changes noticeably:
| Liner shade | Water | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Very light blue | Bright, almost turquoise | Close to a white liner and shows dirt quite a lot |
| Mid blue | The classic pool blue | The most balanced choice |
| Dark blue | Deep sea blue | Warms up a little more easily, shows white dust and scale more |
Dirt, temperature and lighting
Mid blue sits in the middle on everything. Dust and small leaves show, but not as strongly as on white; scale and pollen do not stand out as they do on dark colours. Water temperature is barely affected by a mid blue, so here colour is not a reason for or against. In practice it is a good choice for pools that are cleaned once or twice a week rather than every day.
In the evening, white LED lighting makes light blue glow evenly, and the lights' colour programmes show clearly against it. More on lights and their positions in pool lighting.
When to look at another colour
- If the house has a strong contemporary character with grey materials, where light blue can look ordinary.
- If the pool is set within dense greenery and you want a natural, lake-like result.
- If you like the look of tiles: then a mosaic in blue tones suits better.
You will find the overall comparison of all the options in liner colours.

Questions
Does a light blue liner fade over the years?
Every PVC membrane loses a little of its colour intensity over the years, mainly from sun and chlorine. Keeping pH at 7.2–7.6, chlorine within range and never putting chlorine granules directly onto the liner noticeably reduces wear.
Does a light blue liner suit an overflow pool?
Yes. In an overflow pool the water reaches the edge and the surface looks seamless, so light blue gives a clean, bright mirror. If the pool faces the sea, a lighter shade blends better with the shallow coastal water.
