Prefab pool or removable pool: what changes in practice
A prefab pool is a permanent structure with an anchored steel frame, a reinforced liner and a proper plant room. A store-bought removable pool is a solution for a few months, with thinner materials and a small filter.
Two products with the same name
Both are often called "assembled" pools, because they arrive in pieces and are put together on site. That is where the similarity ends. A store-bought removable pool is designed to be set up on the ground for one summer and then packed away. A prefab pool is a permanent pool: the panels are anchored to a base, the liner is reinforced and the pool stays in place all year round, sunk or raised.
Point-by-point comparison
| Criterion | Prefab pool | Store-bought removable pool |
|---|---|---|
| Walls | 2 mm galvanized panels, anchored, with support buttresses | Light frame or inflatable wall on the ground |
| Lining | 1.5 mm reinforced PVC liner, 10-year written warranty | Thin PVC sheet, built into the kit |
| Filtration | Pump and filter sized for the pool, skimmer or overflow | Small filter supplied with the kit |
| Depth | 1.10 or 1.50 m panels | Usually shallow |
| Position | In the ground or raised up to 1 m | On the ground, on a level surface |
| Use | All year round, with winter closing | Set up in summer, packed away in winter |
The difference in durability shows over the years. The thin sheet of a removable pool is exposed to the sun, punctures more easily and suffers every time it is folded for storage. The frame of a prefab pool is galvanized and stays protected in the ground, while the reinforced liner always works under tension, held in place by the water.
Filtration: where the water is won or lost
The biggest practical difference does not show in a photo. Water stays clean when it passes through a properly sized filter several times a day. The small filters in kits are enough for a little water and a few swimmers, but they struggle with heat, dust and daily use. The result is cloudy water, more chemicals and frequent water changes.
In a prefab pool, the pump and the pool filter are sized to the volume, and the water is drawn off through a skimmer or an overflow channel. The chemistry stays stable and the water is not changed every year.
Looks and space
A removable pool looks like an object sitting in the garden. A prefab pool becomes part of it: it has paving or a deck around it, steps, lighting, and you choose the liner in a colour or a mosaic pattern. If you want a pool above ground, the permanent solution is a raised prefab pool, with the outer walls clad in timber or stone.
When each one makes sense
- Removable: for one or two summers, in a rented house, or to see whether the family will actually use a pool.
- Prefab: when you want a pool for many years, with a proper depth, clean water without a constant battle, and a look that suits the house.
As a permanent structure, a prefab pool needs a small-scale works approval with an engineer's signed declaration, or a building permit if it exceeds the approval's limits.
Tax presumption: assembled pools count too
A common misconception is that a pool you set up and pack away is of no interest to the tax office. The deemed living expenses for a pool (tax presumption) also apply to assembled pools. Your accountant confirms how your own case is treated, based on the dimensions and use.
Questions
Can I sink a removable pool into the ground?
It is not designed for that: its walls cannot withstand the pressure of the soil and cannot be anchored. If you want an in-ground pool, the right solution is a prefab pool with a frame made for excavation and backfilling.
Does a prefab pool need a plant room?
Yes. The equipment goes in a conventional plant room of about 3×2×2 m next to the pool or in a compact plant room, which is also a condition for the small-scale works approval.
