6 × 12 m pool: a large pool with an overflow

Where a 72 m² pool makes sense

At this size the pool stops being a family pool and becomes a shared space. Three cases where it fits:

• A villa with a view, where the pool is the key element of the look of the house and often hosts many guests. See a pool for a villa.

• An estate with a large family, where adults swim, children play and grandparents sit on the steps, all in the same pool.

Water and permit

• Water surface: 72 m².
• 1.10 m panels: water level about 1.0 m, volume about 72 m³.
• 1.50 m panels: water level about 1.4 m, volume about 101 m³.
• Procedure: building permit, since the surface exceeds 50 m². What it involves is covered in pools over 50 m².

With an overflow, the water in the balance tank is added on top. Since the pool needs a permit anyway, the plant room can also be a conventional one, about 3×2×2 m, next to the pool, as the design study will provide. On an island, filling roughly 70 to 100 m³ takes planning with water tanker trucks.

Why an overflow is recommended here

A skimmer works best in pools up to about 60 m². At 72 m², and especially with many swimmers, an overflow pool with an overflow channel keeps the surface consistently clean: the water spills over the whole perimeter, passes through an overflow grating about 25 cm wide, plastic or marble, and collects in a balance tank before it is filtered. For steps and benches in a holiday rental, SOPREMAPOOL non-slip membranes, class C, are worth it.

Planning the space

1. Paving about 1.5 m wide around the grating: about 9×15 m in total.
2. A lounger zone about 3 m deep on the long side, for eight to ten loungers.
3. A shaded zone with seating or a bar on one of the short sides, about 3 m.
4. A shower at every entry point to the pool area.
5. The plant room and the balance tank together, away from the rooms and in a spot that is easy for the maintenance technician to reach.
